About

In 1969 Bill and Frances Bohne along with their three young sons bought the Sherner Farm, a working dairy farm and started to build a dream. The Green Barn deli was born in April of 1969. People came from all over new England for the fine homemade sausages and smoked meats. While they were running the Deli Bill was building the Restaurant. He tore out the walls of the barn and he started to rebuild. By July 1st 1970 The Green Barn Restaurant opened its
main dining room and the dream was starting to take shape.

Nine months later Bill had the Steinkeller Lounge open and ready for dining. Their outstanding German Cuisine brought people in from all over New England. In 1971 The Green Barn was written up in the national restaurant magazine Restaurants and Hospitality as one of the best German restaurants in the country. They were then and still are today proud of their, commitment to the very best in quality and dining.

When people come to the Green Barn they are greeted with a friendly "hello". No one is a customer - all are friends. Bill and Frances' youngest son Carl and his wife Margaret along with their dedicated staff are upholding the tradition of owning with pride the oldest family owned and operated restaurant in Salem.

Carl, Margaret and their entire staff welcome everyone to
The Green Barn!
